Risk Factors for Developing Jaundice
- Prematurity
- Family history of jaundice
- Pitocin use in labor
- East-Asian and Mediterranean descent
- Birth trauma, including bruising
- Feeding difficulties
- Born to a mother with a different blood type or RH factor
- Infrequent passage of tools can cause bilirubin to be reabsorbed by the intestines
And to make matters worse, nobody actually told us pitocin is known to cause jaundice in newborns. Like most useful information these days, we found this factoid on the interwebs. But if we had to do over again, we would have gone with pitocin despite the jaundice risk. So we won't be calling the malpractice attorneys just yet. But it would have been nice to know...
