Rockin' and Rollin'

I once read that babies typically roll over around 3 -4 months of age. Once Nia passed the 4 month mark with no hint of sideways movement, I began to wonder if she would ever roll over. I then resigned myself to the thought that when she's ready, she will roll over (blah blah blah). In the meantime, I bombarded her with tummy time in an effort to increase the strength in her slender neck. They do say babies typically roll from belly to back first.
I made excuses, "well, her head is in the 75th percentile, so maybe it's getting in the way" or "maybe she didn't have enough tummy time given her gastrointestinal issues early in life."
So, you can imagine my surprise (and angst) at the event that occurred this afternoon. Nia had just woken from nap #2 and, as usual, I placed her on her belly and stared at her saying "roll over! roll over!" as if she were a chihuahua and not, in fact, a little human. Resigned to the fact that today was not going to be the day, I shuffled off quickly to the bathroom to (I'm almost embarrassed to say this) pluck a rogue eyebrow hair that had been pestering me. Upon my return, a mere 30 seconds later, I saw none other than our little Nia, a good foot off of the blanket she was laying on, and on her tummy. I quickly realized that when I had left the room, she was on her back and muttered a painful, low-pitched moan expressing my frustration at having missed the first of her many milestones... for an eyebrow hair.
I quickly placed her on her back again, grabbed the camcorder, and pressed record in hopes that she would demonstrate her new found ability once again for all to witness. Alas, my little darling simply looked at me and smiled as if to say, "I'm not your monkey." Touche' daughter. Touche'.

  1. LOL. I would actually roll Lily and say "look, you're rolling, now you do it!" ... and the first time she rolled over, it was during naptime, so I didn't see it either... ;)
